Council flies Ukrainian flag in gesture of solidarity

North Somerset Council is flying the Ukrainian flag at its main buildings as a symbol of solidarity with the people of Ukraine and everyone affected by the conflict and humanitarian crisis. The flag was hoisted today at both the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare and the Castlewood building in Clevedon. A council spokesman said: " My heart goes out to everyone affected by the atrocities we are witnessing in Ukraine. More than a million people have fled the country already with many more expected to follow. Families have been torn apart, lives have been lost, homes destroyed and there has been unspeakable suffering.

More weight loss support available from council

Three more weight management programmes are to be launched to help North Somerset residents achieve a healthy body weight. North Somerset Council's Public Health team, working with local partners, has already launched a number of local programmes and three more will be starting soon.

Urgent plea for landlords to come forward

North Somerset Council has issued an urgent please for landlords and owners of empty homes to come forward and help provide affordable rental properties for people across North Somerset who are in housing need. The council's housing team provides a free lettings service to landlords who can provide good quality, affordable private rented accommodation. In return for a property that can be rented out, the team offers a wide range of free support including tenancy inspections for up to a year, advice on tenancy issues and good lettings practice, a health and safety check to make sure the property complies with rental regulations and an inventory checklist before a property is let.

Put your North Somerset Platinum Jubilee celebrations on the map!

As celebrations begin to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee year, North Somerset residents are being urged to record their celebrations and capture the moment in history. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Queen's Accession to the throne in 1952. The focus of celebrations will take place later in the year over the extended Bank Holiday Weekend June 2-5. During that period the Queen will be attending a number of official events including Trooping the Colour, a service in St Paul's Cathedral, a concert at Buckingham Palace on the Saturday evening, and a spectacular pageant outside Buckingham Place on Sunday 5 June.
