Libdems agains policing billl

LibDems Oppose the Policing Bill - but what about Weston's MP?

Today, Liberal Democrat MPs will be voting against the Conservative Government's Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill as it is an attack on our right to protest (not just during lockdown) as well likely allowing for more racial profiling by the police; this is this a fundamental attack on our basic rights The Bill also proposes an incredibly excessive sentencing change for up to 10 years in prison for defacing statues or memorials. Weston's LibDem Spokesperson Patrick Keating has written to the local Tory MP asking him to stand up for our rights and freedoms and vote against this draconian bill tonight. Patrick said: "The Conservatives' plans to crackdown on protests are dangerous and draconian. The appalling scenes on Clapham Common at the weekend only confirm this. The Liberal Democrats will fiercely resist anti-democratic attempts to silence protest. This is why I wrote yesterday to Weston's MP asking him to vote against the Government on this crucial piece of legislation." The picture

Greening the West of England

While North Somerset may not (yet) be members of WECA, we do participate in joint projects and are significantly impacted by what they do. So, while we can't vote for the next mayor, we do want them to understand the priorities of people in Weston and the surrounding villages. A good first step would be to share your thoughts on Greening the West of England, with LibDem Candidate Stephen Williams, using the form below: https://libdems.typeform.com/to/zlh1u9Is?fbclid=IwAR3NSH4JP5ohGL7pP9ON1N5jcnrskvm7wdl6jvjq4eVE1UASbT7gvIYWSSk

Is the Freeport hype just a bit too good to be true?

Today is the deadline for organisations to submit bids to the Government's Freeport scheme. Freeports allow businesses with a specific area to operate with no or low tax and with weaker environmental, labour and planning rules. The plans by the West of England Mayor to bring a Free Port to Bristol raise a lot of questions and Cllr Patrick Keating has written a piece for Bristol 24/7 setting out his concerns: https://www.bristol247.com/.../as-it-stands-the-bristol.../

Rapid community testing site opening in Weston

Following the successful recent launch of rapid testing for the community in North Somerset a new site in Weston is set to open next week. North Somerset Council's second testing centre, which can be accessed by anyone who lives or works in North Somerset, will start running tests from Tuesday 26 January at Hutton Moor Leisure Centre, Weston-super-Mare. Council leaders are encouraging critical workers and volunteers who cannot work from home during lockdown to get weekly tests, which give results in under an hour. Rapid community testing aims to find people who are infectious with Covid-19 but do not have symptoms. This allows them to isolate, taking the virus out of the community and stopping the spread. As a negative test is only as good as the moment it is taken, it cannot be used as a reason to avoid following Covid safety guidelines. It is vital those who test negative continue to wash their hands, wear a face covering if they can, keep at least 2m away from anyone not in their household or so
