Tax Credit cuts to hit more than 9,000 children in Weston
More than 9,000 children in Weston could be hit by tax credit cuts
New figures from the House of Commons Library show that thousands of local families will be worse off as a result of Government plans to cut tax credits.
The research, uncovered by North Somerset's Liberal Democrat Leader Mike Bell, shows that 4,800 working families with children in the Weston-super-Mare constituency are claiming tax credits.
These families will see their income decline as a result of the tax credit cuts, with households set to lose an average of £1,300 per year. More than 9,200 children live in the households affected.
Councillor Mike Bell commented: "Weston's Conservative MP John Penrose voted for the tax credit cuts that will hit thousands of local families.
"The people hit by these changes needed someone to give them a voice in Parliament and fight their corner and will feel let down by Mr Penrose.
"Liberal Democrats in Parliament voted against the tax credit cut. David Cameron promised not to cut tax credits and has broken that promise.
"My ward, Weston-super-Mare Central, like much of our town, has a lot of residents working for relatively low pay to keep their family afloat. To cut tax credits designed to support working families is short-sighted, unfair and will drive people out of jobs instead of into them."
