Police Commissioner Visit - Cllr Robert Payne

6 Nov 2018

Councillor Robert Payne met with the Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens, along with the District Commander for North Somerset and the town centre beat manager this week to discuss police issues in central Weston. They discussed the drugs issues and anti-social behaviour in the town, and the priorities for the police going forward. Robert also questioned the rise in the number of reports of domestic abuse in the Avon and Somerset police area.

Robert believes the local police are doing an admirable job under the current circumstances, but with the huge cuts to police funding and to the number of officers, it is becoming an almost impossible job. He said: "Any organisation that loses thousands of its frontline staff is going see a fall in its efficiency, and the police in no exception. That is the main reason we're seeing a rise in crimes such as burglary, but a reduction in the number of criminals who are brought to justice. We urgently need central Government to address this issue of underfunding, so we can build up an effective policy force which discourages crime and anti-social behaviour."
