North Somerset's secondary schools are among the best performing in England - but its primary schools are still some way behind, Ofsted's annual report has revealed.

93 per cent of North Somerset's secondary schools are rated "good" or "outstanding" by the government's education watchdog, ranking the district 17th in England for secondary school performance in its annual report for 2014/15.

But North Somerset ranks much lower for primary school performance, coming 73rd in the country with 86 per cent of schools rated "good" or "outstanding" by Ofsted.

Councillor Mike Bell, the Liberal Democrat opposition leader on North Somerset Council and Councillor for Weston-super-Mare Central Ward, said: "We should be really proud of all our local schools. Our secondary schools are among the best in the country and our primaries have continued to improve.

"At a time when school budgets have been under pressure, our teachers and support teams deserve our congratulations on continuing to do a good job for local children and young people.

"The aspiration for North Somerset should be to be the very best in the country and determined leadership from head teachers is helping to make that happen."
