Justice & Civil Liberties

You can trust the Liberal Democrats to fight for freedom of speech and all our civil liberties.

Where the Tories will play UKIP's game of demonising immigrants and refugees, we will continue to make the positive case for immigration and urge the Government to work with partners, both domestic and international, to do more for refugees.

We remain committed to the Human Rights Act and will fight tooth and nail to stop this Brexit Government watering down our rights.

Since the referendum we have seen a spike in hate crimes fuelled by divisive language coming from the Home Secretary and Prime Minister.

Rather than uniting us after a bitter campaign that opened divisions up and down the country, it is clear that the Tory party will continue to pander to the nationalists and populists both in their party and others.

The Liberal Democrats are the only ones who will stand up for EU citizens right to stay, to make the positive case for immigration and fight for the Human rights Act.

We will not ignore the problems but do what works to tackle them.

On state surveillance we were the only ones in Parliament to fight against Government proposals to collect and store all our web histories for 12 months, a mass surveillance programme that would cost billions. Billions that would be better spent on community policing.

On extremism, rather than pour more money down the drain via the Prevent programme we would scrap it and introduce a community-led scheme that has legitimacy and can divert young people away from radicalisation.

Rather than chase after headlines we will do what works.

Whilst both the Conservatives and Labour are in an arms race to look tough on crime and criminals the Liberal Democrats are concentrating on doing what works.

Our prisons are dangerous, overcrowded and in crisis.

The Liberal Democrats would introduce a presumption against short sentences that do not work and cost the taxpayers millions of pounds each year.

Unless we bring prison numbers down, prison officers will not be able to do their job and rather than being places for education and rehabilitation they will continue to be warehouses for criminals.

Our justice system is one of the best in the world and Liberal Democrats will continue to stand up for judges and the Court in the face of media and political attacks.
