Identity & Equalities

Liberal Democrats want to build a Britain that is open, united and tolerant. Yet at the moment our country is more unequal and divided than it has ever been.

The opportunities we have to live comfortably and freely are less than those of our parents and the future for our children if we carry on down this route does not fill us with hope.

Our identity as a nation used to be one of openness and tolerance where everyone regardless of background would be able to get on. The Liberal Democrats want to make this true again.

Liberal Democrats believe that we must support society's most vulnerable.

We reject the idea that people in need of our support are 'scroungers' and oppose utterly the disgraceful rise in hate crime, against disabled people, the LGBT+ community and BME members of society.

In Coalition we introduced mandatory gender pay gap reporting to name and shame those companies that weren't paying employees equally for equal work, we would expand that to cover BAME pay-gaps.

We would also give young people the tools to reach their potential and break down the barriers between rural communities and urban populations.

Rather than bury our heads in the sand like the Conservatives we would respond to a changing society.

Introducing cohabitation rights and civil partnerships for opposite sex couples are concrete ways that we can make sure that equality works across the board for everyone.

We have trailblazed the way on transgender rights and will continue to call on the other parties to follow our lead.

Equal marriage was one of our greatest successes in Coalition but there is still so much left to do.
